Memories of Mr David White - Pupil - 1948 - 1953

When I went to Romsley School there were three classrooms (old part of school now). The cloakroom was at the back and the entrance to the school was also at the back. You went up some steps to the entrance. The toilets were outside at the back of the school in the school playground.

Miss Payne was a teacher and Mrs Southall was the head teacher. Mrs Southall had a Morris 8 car and she parked it where the Malt Shovel Row used to be, opposite the school.

When the weather was fine I used to go to school down the gully opposite to where I lived in Dark Lane and turn into the fields opposite where Mr Chatwin used to make chains in his shed. It was good to walk across the fields but when it was wet we walked up Dark Lane, Poplar Lane and turned left onto the main road to school.

We had a garden for the boys to work in at the side of the school.

We used to walk to the Mission Room, which is now called the Church Hall, for our cooked dinner. Siddalls used to bring it to the hall by an Austin 10 Pick-up, possibly ex-army and an Austin Devon van.

I can remember Leonard Wagstaff's Dad making hay in the field between the school and the 'Fighting Cocks' (now 'Swallow's Nest'). He turned the hay with a hand rake.
